  Zephania Kameeta - Towards Liberation
Crossing boundaries between church and politics

Lecture – Meditations – Sermons
Edited by Jörg Baumgarten
Zephania Kameeta was a central bearer of hope in the church’s anti-apartheid movement in Germany and in such countries as the Netherlands, in Scandinavia and the USA in the struggle to eliminate the discriminatory and oppressive system of apartheid. As a liberation theologian, political activist and church leader, he was imprisoned on several occasions. Despite enormous obstacles, he accepted invitations to many countries. His lectures and speeches during this period were seldom written down in advance, even though the secret service and South Africa friendly press were following his every footstep. These speeches and interviews are documents from a period of great suspense and bear witness to a man, who, thoroughly rooted in faith, was fearlessly articulating the liberating message of the Old and New Testaments in a contextual and topical way. The documents collected here, predominantly lectures and speeches, interviews and letters, meditations and prayers, sermons and worship texts, cover the period from 1975 to 2005. They, therefore, encompass the period of struggle against apartheid, the gripping period of preparation for Namibia’s independence (1989/1990), the ten years in which Dr Kameeta was Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Namibia (1990 – 2000), as well as the first years of his return to the church ministry as a pastor of a rural parish, as non-executive chairperson of the council (Moderator) of the United Evangelical Mission and as one of the Presidents of the Lutheran World Federation.
